A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A Short Summary:
The Watchers by A. M. Shine follows Mina, a woman who becomes stranded in a remote and impenetrable forest. As night falls, she is forced into a strange underground bunker with other survivors, all bound by one terrifying rule: they must remain visible to the unseen creatures lurking in the darkness.
Each night, the group gathers in a glass-walled room to be observed, unsure of who, or what, is watching. As tension builds and secrets unravel, the bunker's fragile safety begins to break down, revealing a far more unsettling truth about the forest and its inhabitants.

My Review:
This one genuinely caught me off guard.
The premise is simple, almost deceptively so. A woman trapped in a forest. A bunker. Something watching. But the execution is what makes The Watchers stand out. There’s a constant sense of unease that builds slowly, pulling you deeper into the mystery without ever fully letting you get comfortable.
The atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting here. The forest feels oppressive, the rules feel arbitrary but absolute, and the idea of being watched, constantly, silently, never quite leaves you alone as a reader. It’s the kind of tension that lingers rather than jumps out at you.
And then there are the turns. Just when you think you’ve settled into what kind of story this is, it shifts. Not in a chaotic way, but enough to keep you guessing and slightly off-balance.
Stunned me. Scared me. Surprised me.
