Zoey inherits millions, which motivate murderers

A Short Summary:

Zoey Ashe is barely getting through life as a barista in a trailer park when she suddenly learns that she has inherited the enormous fortune and criminal empire of a recently murdered billionaire. Overnight, she is pulled into a futuristic city overflowing with designer violence, internet celebrities, corrupt corporations, private militias, and people willing to kill for money and influence. Zoey quickly discovers that inheriting wealth also means inheriting enemies.

As assassins, opportunists, and power-hungry executives close in around her, Zoey must figure out who she can trust while navigating a society driven entirely by spectacle, technology, and capitalism gone feral. Beneath the explosions, dark humor, and bizarre futuristic gadgets is a sharp satire about fame, wealth, social media culture, and what happens when human beings become entertainment.

My Review:

Jason Pargin’s Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits is a darkly comedic dystopian science fiction novel that blends cyberpunk absurdity with razor-sharp social commentary. Originally published under the name David Wong, the novel follows Zoey Ashe, an ordinary young woman whose life completely implodes after she inherits the fortune and criminal empire of a notorious billionaire. That inheritance immediately paints a target on her back.

Suddenly Zoey finds herself hunted by assassins, manipulated by corporations, judged by internet mobs, and trapped inside a city where violence, celebrity culture, and capitalism have merged into one terrifying spectacle. The future Pargin creates feels exaggerated right up until you realize how much of it already exists in modern culture. Social media outrage cycles, performative morality, influencer obsession, and monetized chaos are all pushed to their logical extremes.

What makes the novel work so well is its balance between satire and genuine humanity. The humor is outrageous, often ridiculous, and sometimes shockingly dark, but the emotional core remains strong because Zoey feels believable. She is overwhelmed, sarcastic, frightened, stubborn, and trying to survive a world that rewards spectacle over decency. That grounding keeps the story from collapsing into pure parody.

The pacing is relentless. There are explosions, bizarre gadgets, criminal conspiracies, internet celebrities, and enough strange futuristic details to keep the entire novel feeling energetic and unpredictable. At the same time, Pargin constantly slips in commentary about wealth inequality, online behavior, corporate power, and the commodification of violence.

I was particularly interested in the family dynamics running underneath the story. Zoey’s relationship with her mother left me disappointed and frustrated at times, but that emotional response added another layer to the novel. Beneath all the futuristic absurdity is a story about abandonment, identity, and learning how to define yourself when the world wants to turn you into a product.

Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits is hilarious, brutal, clever, and disturbingly relevant. Readers who enjoy satirical science fiction, cyberpunk dystopias, and fast-moving speculative fiction with strong social commentary will likely have a great time with this one. It is messy, loud, violent, and completely unforgettable.
