A problem from the past pops up for Pickett

A Short Summary:

In Vicious Circle, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett finds himself facing danger from his past when an old enemy resurfaces with deadly intentions. As violence escalates and hidden criminal networks begin to emerge, Joe is pulled into another high-stakes investigation that threatens both his career and his family.

Set against the rugged backdrop of Wyoming, the novel combines western atmosphere with tense detective work, political corruption, and nonstop suspense. As Joe uncovers deeper layers of the case, he discovers just how far organized crime and revenge can reach into places that appear quiet on the surface.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"Being a bureaucrat means never having to say you're sorry."

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you carry a grudge?

Are you afraid of your past?

My Review:

C.J. Box really knows how to write western crime fiction, and Vicious Circle is one of those novels that keeps the pressure on from beginning to end. The story moves quickly, balancing action, investigation, and family tension without ever feeling overcrowded.

What makes the Joe Pickett novels work so well is that Wyoming itself becomes part of the story. The mountains, open land, isolation, and harsh weather all add to the atmosphere and danger. There is always this feeling that trouble can appear from anywhere, even in places that look peaceful and untouched.

This particular novel has a great mystery at its core, with plenty of twists and turns to keep things engaging. Every time Joe thinks he understands what is happening, the situation becomes more complicated and dangerous. The criminal networks operating beneath the surface were genuinely surprising; you really would not expect that level of organized trouble to be hiding out in Wyoming, which gives the book an extra layer of tension.

Joe Pickett remains an easy protagonist to root for because he feels grounded and believable. He is stubborn, moral, and willing to put himself at risk to protect others, even when the consequences become personal. Overall, Vicious Circle is an entertaining western murder mystery packed with suspense, action, and the kind of rugged setting that crime fiction fans love.
