The friendship of George and Lennie

A Short Summary:

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck follows the unlikely friendship between George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced ranch workers chasing a fragile dream during the Great Depression. Their bond is built on loyalty and protection, but also burdened by misunderstanding and the harsh realities of the world around them.

Set against a backdrop of isolation and economic hardship, Steinbeck’s novella explores what it means to belong, and what happens to those who never truly can.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"Knowing a man well never leads to hate and nearly always leads to love."
- John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men

Quote by John Steinbeck about understanding and love from Of Mice and Men over a rural shack and hillside background

Questions to ponder while reading:

What are your dreams?

What would you do for a friend?

My Review:

This book is a must-read. But more than that, this is one of those rare books that earns its place in everyone's canon.

Of Mice and Men isn’t just about friendship; it’s about fragile dreams in a world that has no intention of letting them survive. George and Lennie’s hope of owning land is simple, almost childlike, and that’s what makes it so powerful. You want to believe in it, even as everything around them suggests it will never happen.

And Lennie… that’s where the story settles in and refuses to let go. Steinbeck doesn’t make him a symbol; he makes him human. Gentle, dangerous, innocent, and doomed all at once. You understand him, and because you understand him, you feel the inevitability of what’s coming. That’s the real strength of this book: there are no surprises, only consequences.

The loneliness of the ranch hands, the quiet desperation of characters like Candy and Crooks, the isolation of Curley’s wife, every thread points to the same truth: most people in this world are just trying not to be alone, and most of them fail. And then there’s that ending.
