A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A Short Summary:
Wearing the Lion by John Wiswell reimagines the story of Heracles, focusing not only on his legendary strength but on his humanity. Through a fresh lens, the novel explores his relationship with Hera and reframes the myth in a more compassionate and introspective way.
Rather than centering solely on heroic feats, the story leans into identity, connection, and understanding. It presents a version of Heracles that is thoughtful and vulnerable, offering a new perspective on a well-known myth.

My Review:
This is such a refreshing take on a familiar story.
Wearing the Lion steps away from the usual “heroic brute strength” version of Heracles and gives us something quieter and more thoughtful. The tone is gentle without losing depth, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.
What stands out most is the approach to character, especially the relationship with Hera. Instead of leaning into conflict alone, the story explores understanding, identity, and what it means to exist within a myth that has already defined you.
It’s sweet in places, but not simplistic. There’s still an adult awareness underneath it, which keeps it grounded. If you’re used to darker or more action-heavy retellings, this might feel different, but in a good way.
A thoughtful, character-driven retelling that softens the myth without losing its weight.
