A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Beginning at Basgaith War College

A Short Summary:

Violet Sorrengail expected to spend her life among books, studying history, and becoming a scribe. Instead, her powerful mother forces her into Basgiath War College, where dragon riders are trained through brutal competition, deadly trials, and constant violence. Smaller and physically weaker than many of the other cadets, Violet quickly realizes that survival at Basgiath depends as much on intelligence and adaptability as it does strength.

As rivalries intensify and dragons choose their riders, Violet becomes entangled in dangerous politics, forbidden truths, and growing tensions both inside and outside the kingdom. What begins as a desperate struggle to survive transforms into something far larger,  a fight over power, loyalty, and the future itself.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"Hope is a fickle, dangerous thing. It steals your focus and aims it toward the possibilities instead of keeping it where it belongs - on the probabilities."
- Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you get to choose your destiny?

Is physical strength the only kind?

My Review:

Fourth Wing succeeds because it fully commits to momentum. Rebecca Yarros writes with the pacing of a thriller, constantly pushing the reader from one dangerous situation to the next while balancing action, emotional tension, political intrigue, and romance. The result is one of those rare fantasy novels that becomes genuinely difficult to put down once the story gains speed.

The setting of Basgiath War College works exceptionally well because it creates constant pressure. Every interaction feels dangerous, every challenge has real stakes, and the dragons themselves add unpredictability and awe to the worldbuilding. The survival-focused atmosphere gives the novel an intensity that keeps even quieter scenes engaging.

Violet is also an effective protagonist because she survives through intelligence and persistence rather than brute strength. Her physical limitations become part of the story rather than something ignored, forcing her to think differently from the people around her. That makes many of her victories feel earned instead of inevitable.

The novel’s blend of military fantasy, dragon lore, romance, and political conspiracy clearly struck a nerve with readers for good reason. It is dramatic, fast-moving, emotionally charged, and designed to keep the pages turning. Edge-of-your-seat action, compelling character dynamics, and a relentless pace make Fourth Wing one of the most addictive fantasy reads in recent years.
