How to know what to do.

A Short Summary:

Discernment: Reading the Signs of Daily Life explores the Christian practice of recognizing God’s guidance in everyday life. Drawing from lectures and teachings by Henri Nouwen, the book reflects on prayer, community, silence, relationships, inner peace, and the struggle to understand where God may be leading us. Rather than offering rigid formulas, Nouwen encourages readers to cultivate attentiveness, humility, and trust.

The book emphasizes that discernment is not simply about choosing between good and bad, but often about choosing between multiple good paths while remaining open to grace and wisdom. Through stories, reflections, and spiritual insight, Nouwen presents discernment as an ongoing process of listening carefully to both God and the movements of the human heart.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"Lord Jesus, let me know where you want me to go, and I will follow you. But please be clear about it."

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you know who you really are?

Do you feel like you are who you are meant to be?

My Review:

Discernment feels less like a lecture and more like sitting quietly with a wise spiritual mentor. Henri Nouwen writes with gentleness and honesty, acknowledging how difficult it can be to know what direction to take in life. Instead of pretending there are easy answers, he makes room for uncertainty, patience, and prayer.

What I appreciated most about this book is that it approaches discernment as something deeply human. Nouwen understands fear, exhaustion, loneliness, ambition, and self-doubt. He recognizes how difficult it can be to separate ego, anxiety, and outside pressure from genuine spiritual calling. That honesty gives the book a comforting and grounded tone.

There are many thoughtful insights throughout the book about silence, community, and learning to pay attention to what brings peace versus what produces confusion or restlessness. Nouwen consistently points readers back toward prayer, humility, and trust rather than endless striving or overanalysis.

Ultimately, I found this to be a deeply encouraging read. It is the kind of book that invites reflection rather than rushing toward conclusions. And honestly, like Nouwen himself, I hope I’m on the right path too.
