A Short Summary:
Nathan Harris’s Amity follows siblings separated by violence and circumstance as they struggle to survive in the unforgiving Chihuahuan Desert. Along the way, the novel explores themes of family loyalty, endurance, identity, and the desperate hope of freedom. The desert itself becomes more than a backdrop; it is a living force that shapes every decision and every relationship.
As the story unfolds, Harris gradually reveals the emotional weight each character carries. The novel balances danger and tenderness remarkably well, weaving together moments of fear, sacrifice, and humanity. Through shifting alliances and difficult choices, the characters discover that survival often depends as much on compassion as strength.

My Review:
Amity is a really strong historical novel centered around a period and place that do not get enough attention in fiction. Nathan Harris creates a harsh yet vivid world, and the pacing keeps the story moving without sacrificing the book's emotional core. The Chihuahuan Desert feels enormous and dangerous, yet at times strangely beautiful, lending the novel a powerful atmosphere.
What stood out most to me was Coleman. He felt grounded and believable, especially in the way he handled difficult moral choices. By the end of the novel, his actions carried real emotional weight, and I appreciated that Harris allowed him to remain thoughtful and human rather than turning him into a simple hero archetype. That restraint made the story stronger.
The book also does a great job balancing suspense with character development. Even during tense moments, Harris never loses sight of the emotional bonds between the siblings or the cost of survival. The novel asks difficult questions about loyalty, violence, and freedom without becoming preachy.
Overall, Amity is engaging, well-paced historical fiction with memorable characters and a setting that lingers long after the final page. Readers who enjoy literary historical fiction with emotional depth and a strong sense of place will likely find much to appreciate here.
