A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A Short Summary:
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz is a layered mystery that unfolds in two intertwined narratives. The novel begins with a traditional detective story featuring the brilliant but aging Atticus Pünd, who is investigating a suspicious death in an English village. But before the mystery can be resolved, the manuscript abruptly ends, leaving both the reader and the editor, Susan Ryeland, without answers.
What follows is a second mystery in the real world, as Susan sets out to uncover not only the missing ending, but the truth behind the author’s sudden death. As the two narratives mirror and inform each other, Horowitz creates a clever and intricate puzzle that plays with the conventions of classic detective fiction while delivering a thoroughly modern twist.

My Review:
This is the kind of book that reminds you why mystery novels are so much fun in the first place.
Magpie Murders doesn’t just tell a story, it plays a game with the reader. Anthony Horowitz leans into the structure of classic whodunits, giving us a traditional detective mystery complete with suspects, clues, and a wonderfully sharp investigator in Atticus Pünd. And just when you settle into that rhythm, the book pulls the rug out from under you. Because this isn’t just one mystery, it’s two.
The “story within a story” structure is where this novel really shines. The fictional manuscript and the real-world investigation echo each other in ways that are both clever and satisfying, rewarding readers who pay attention while still keeping the pace brisk and engaging. It’s a love letter to golden-age detective fiction, but with enough modern awareness to keep it from feeling like imitation. And above all else—it’s fun.
That’s the word that kept coming back to me while reading it. Fun in the twists, fun in the reveals, fun in trying (and failing) to piece everything together before the final pages. It’s the kind of book you pick up for “just one more chapter” and suddenly realize you’ve read half the night away.
If you enjoy classic mysteries with a clever twist, or if you like books that play with structure in unexpected ways, this is absolutely worth your time.
