Profiling a climbing killer.

A short summary:

The Alienist is set in late-nineteenth-century New York City, where a brutal serial killer is stalking vulnerable victims and baffling the police. When conventional methods fail, an unlikely group forms around an early psychologist—an “alienist”—who believes the key to catching the murderer lies in understanding his mind.

Through careful observation, emerging forensic techniques, and what we would now recognize as criminal profiling, the investigation pushes against the limits of science, social norms, and institutional resistance. Carr weaves real historical figures and events into a dark, meticulously researched mystery that captures a city and a discipline on the brink of modernity.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Change isn't something most people enjoy, even if it's progressive change."
- Caleb Carr, The Alienist

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you have any issues with your mother?

What are your thoughts regarding prostitution?

My review:

This one has a distinctly Sherlock-y feel, and that’s part of the fun.

The Alienist is a mystery turned up to the maximum: sprawling, methodical, and deeply immersive. Carr takes his time building both the investigation and the atmosphere, letting readers sink into gaslit streets, social hierarchies, and the uneasy birth of criminal psychology.

What makes the book especially engaging is its confidence. It trusts the reader to follow a complex trail of clues and ideas without rushing toward easy answers. The result is a story that feels intellectually satisfying without sacrificing suspense.

This is great fun in a book, dense, dark, and rewarding. If you enjoy mysteries that blend brains, history, and dread, The Alienist delivers.
