A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Alliances, lies, and a final act of love.

A Short Summary:

In Onyx Storm, Rebecca Yarros continues her sprawling fantasy saga of dragons, warfare, political intrigue, and dangerous magic. Old alliances begin to fracture while new loyalties are tested, forcing characters to navigate a world built on secrets, shifting power, and survival. As threats close in from every direction, personal relationships become just as dangerous as the battlefield itself.

At its core, the novel is about trust,  who deserves it, who abuses it, and what people are willing to sacrifice for those they love. Between betrayals, revelations, and moments of devastating loss, Onyx Storm pushes its characters toward impossible choices that will shape the future of their world.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"Pain isn't a competition; there's always enough to go around."

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you always support your partner?

Would you do the wrong thing for the right reason?

My Review:

One of the biggest reasons books like Onyx Storm have become so popular is that Rebecca Yarros understands pacing extremely well. The story constantly moves. There are revelations, emotional confrontations, romantic tension, battles, and cliffhangers packed throughout the novel, making it very easy to keep turning pages. Even when the larger worldbuilding becomes complicated, the emotional stakes remain clear enough to hold the reader’s attention.

The book also leans heavily into the blend of fantasy, adventure, and romance that readers now expect in modern romantasy. Dragons, magical conflict, hidden agendas, and personal relationships intertwine into a deeply emotional story. Yarros writes with a cinematic style that feels designed to create memorable moments and dramatic reveals.

What stood out to me most was less the individual plot details and more the sheer momentum of the series itself. Onyx Storm feels very aware of its audience and of the emotional investment readers already have in these characters and relationships. Even if it was not a book I connected with deeply on a literary level, I can absolutely understand why the series has developed such a massive following.
