A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The saga of the king killers continues.

A Short Summary:

Four Ruined Realms continues the dangerous saga of the kingdom’s legendary king-killers as alliances fracture and old loyalties crumble. With kingdoms balancing on the edge of war and betrayal hiding behind nearly every promise, the surviving characters are forced deeper into political conspiracies, deadly rivalries, and impossible choices.

As the group navigates shifting alliances, hidden agendas, and mounting violence, the cost of power becomes increasingly brutal. The story expands its worldbuilding while pushing its characters into darker and more dangerous territory. Battles, secrets, betrayals, and shocking deaths drive the narrative forward at a relentless pace, leaving readers constantly wondering who will survive long enough to claim victory.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"Every person dies. The difference is in how they lived."

Questions to ponder while reading:

What would you give up?

Do you always tell the truth?

My Review:

Four Ruined Realms delivers exactly what fantasy readers usually want from a sequel: bigger stakes, more danger, more betrayal, and far more emotional damage. Mai Corland keeps the story moving quickly with constant twists, shifting loyalties, and action-heavy scenes that make the book difficult to put down.

One of the strongest elements of the novel is the pacing. There is very little downtime, and the story constantly pushes the characters into new conflicts and impossible situations. The political maneuvering mixes well with the action sequences, giving the book both momentum and tension without becoming overly dense or complicated.

And honestly, there were several moments that genuinely shocked me. I hit more than one scene where I had to stop and think, “Wait… they actually did that?” The emotional stakes feel higher this time around, especially because the story is increasingly willing to let major consequences stick. Fantasy series sometimes avoid real loss, but Four Ruined Realms is not afraid to hurt its characters, or its readers.

The book works especially well for readers who enjoy ensemble fantasy casts, morally gray characters, assassins, royal intrigue, and high-stakes adventure. Dramatic, fast-moving, and full of twists, this is a very entertaining continuation of the series and absolutely leaves readers eager for the next installment.
