The Rise of the Phoenix

A Short Summary:

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang follows Rin, a war orphan who escapes poverty by earning a place at an elite military academy. There, she discovers not only political intrigue and brutal training, but also a rare and dangerous connection to shamanic powers rooted in ancient mythology.

As war erupts across the empire, Rin is drawn into a conflict far larger and more devastating than she imagined. What begins as a story of ambition and survival transforms into a brutal exploration of war, power, and the cost of vengeance.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"War does not determine who's right. War determines who remains."

Questions to ponder while reading:

How driven are you?

Should humans have the power of the gods?

My Review:

This one doesn’t stay where you expect it to.

The Poppy War starts with a familiar structure: an underdog student, an elite academy, and rising through discipline and talent. You think you know the shape of the story. And then it shifts. Hard.

What follows is far darker than most fantasy in this lane. Kuang draws heavily on real historical events, and that grounding lends the violence and destruction a weight that’s difficult to ignore. This isn’t stylized war; it’s brutal, chaotic, and often deeply uncomfortable.

At the same time, the fantasy elements, particularly the shamanism and connection to the gods, add another layer entirely. Power here is not clean or heroic. It’s volatile and consuming, and it comes with a cost that keeps escalating.

It’s gripping, fast-moving, and full of intrigue, but it also asks a lot of its readers. Not just attention, but willingness to sit with some very dark material.

Great action. Strong world-building. And a story that refuses to stay in a safe or predictable lane.
