A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is set in a near future where much of humanity has retreated into a vast virtual reality known as the OASIS. When the system’s creator dies, he leaves behind a high-stakes puzzle hunt, one that promises unimaginable wealth and control of the digital universe to whoever can solve it.
What follows is a race that blurs the line between virtual achievement and real-world consequence. Gamers, corporations, and idealists collide as encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture, gaming, and role-playing becomes a literal survival skill. The novel turns digital obsession into a battleground where intelligence, curiosity, and creativity matter as much as strength.
In this world, the virtual may be the playground, but the prize is very real.

My review:
This is the ultimate dystopian gamer’s guide, fast, funny, and unapologetically nerdy. Ready Player One leans hard into pop-culture references, gaming logic, and role-playing mechanics, and it does so with enthusiasm rather than irony.
It’s great fun to read, especially if you’ve ever wondered whether all that trivia, dungeon-mastering, or problem-solving might actually pay off someday. Beneath the nostalgia and playfulness, though, there’s a serious question humming along: What happens when escape becomes more appealing than reality—and who gets to control the places we escape to?
The book never pretends to be subtle, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s immersive, entertaining, and clever enough to justify every page turn. You finish it grinning, and maybe feeling a little better about your useless knowledge.
