A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao book review graphic with sailboat at sunset and novel cover for Rite of Fancy
The mystical search for a stolen choice.

A Short Summary:

In Water Moon, Samantha Sotto Yambao crafts a lyrical, dreamlike story about the fragility of human choices. When a mysterious object representing someone’s life decision is stolen, the search to recover it becomes far more than a simple quest. It becomes a journey through the strange landscape of memory, regret, and the roads we never took.

Blending magical realism with philosophical reflection, the novel explores how every decision shapes the path ahead—and how even the smallest moment of hesitation can ripple through an entire life.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"Arriving at one's destination is never promised. Only the journey is."

Questions to Ponder While Reading:

Would you give up a regret?

Do you know your whole story?

My Review:

Samantha Sotto Yambao’s Water Moon reads like a modern fairy tale for adults, quietly mystical, thoughtful, and deeply concerned with the nature of choice. At its heart, the story asks a deceptively simple question: what happens when we wish we had chosen differently?

The premise is wonderfully imaginative. When a symbolic “choice” is stolen, the search to recover it becomes a journey through a surreal world that reflects the inner landscapes of the people who inhabit it. This mystical framework allows Yambao to explore some of the most universal human emotions: regret, longing, curiosity, and the persistent question of whether we could have lived our lives differently.

What makes the novel work so well is its tone. Rather than leaning into fast-paced fantasy adventure, Water Moon unfolds like a fable. The pacing is gentle and reflective, giving the reader time to consider the deeper ideas beneath the story. It’s less about action and more about contemplation—about the strange human habit of knowing what we should do, and doing something else anyway.

The book also captures a truth that many readers will recognize: the quiet ache of wondering about the road not taken. Yet instead of dwelling in regret, the story ultimately suggests that the journey itself, the messy, uncertain path we walk, is the only destination we are ever truly promised.

Mythical, thoughtful, and quietly profound, Water Moon feels like a fairy tale meant to remind us that our lives are built one choice at a time.
