A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak book cover displayed over a wooded cabin background announcing a short summary and review.

A recovering babysitter discovers a sinister secret about her ward.

A Short Summary:

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak follows Mallory Quinn, a young woman recovering from addiction, who takes a job as a live-in babysitter for a wealthy family in New Jersey. The job seems ideal: supportive employers, a beautiful home, and a bright five-year-old boy named Teddy. But Teddy’s drawings begin to change. What starts as innocent sketches slowly becomes something darker,  detailed images that appear far beyond a child’s imagination.

As Mallory investigates the disturbing artwork, she begins to suspect that the drawings may be connected to a long-buried crime. The deeper she looks, the more unsettling the situation becomes, forcing her to question not only the house and its history, but also the people she thought she could trust.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"We don't know how much our bodies can endure until we make cruel demands of them."

Questions to Ponder While Reading:

When do you turn in your notice?

When do you call the police?

My Review:

Jason Rekulak’s Hidden Pictures is a gripping psychological thriller that blends suspense, mystery, and supernatural unease into a fast-paced and deeply unsettling story. From the beginning, Mallory Quinn is an engaging protagonist. As a recovering addict trying to rebuild her life, she is both vulnerable and determined, making her a compelling lens through which the story unfolds.

The novel’s central mystery grows increasingly disturbing as Teddy’s drawings evolve from innocent childhood pictures into scenes that hint at violence and hidden history. Rekulak cleverly uses these drawings throughout the book as a storytelling device, allowing the reader to experience the same creeping dread that Mallory feels as she realizes that something is terribly wrong.

What makes Hidden Pictures particularly effective is its pacing. The tension builds steadily, with each revelation raising new questions about the past and the motives of the people surrounding Mallory. The relationships within the story are complicated and often uncomfortable, adding another layer of tension to an already unsettling narrative.

At its core, the novel is about endurance, both physical and emotional. Mallory’s struggle to maintain her sobriety while confronting increasingly terrifying discoveries adds real emotional weight to the story. Readers are constantly left wondering whether she can trust her own perceptions or whether her past might be influencing what she sees.

Suspenseful, eerie, and ultimately satisfying, Hidden Pictures is the kind of thriller that keeps readers turning pages late into the night. For anyone who enjoys psychological suspense with a touch of the supernatural, Jason Rekulak delivers a chilling and memorable read.
