A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
The Stroke of Winter follows a chef seeking a quieter life who purchases and renovates a grand but decaying historic home. What begins as a fresh start and a professional detour slowly reveals itself to be an encounter with a haunted past that refuses to stay buried.
As the restoration progresses, so do unsettling discoveries: lingering spirits, hidden histories, and a house that remembers more than it should. The novel blends the sensual comforts of food and domestic craft with eerie revelations, using the rhythms of renovation and cooking to mirror the slow uncovering of long-suppressed truths.
Wendy Webb excels at weaving atmosphere into place. The house is not just a setting but a presence, and winter itself becomes a character, quiet, isolating, and heavy with memory.

My review of the book:
This is a fun, deeply satisfying haunted house story.
Not terrifying, but richly atmospheric and immersive. The kind of book you want to read, wrapped in a blanket while something simmers on the stove. I loved the balance between the eerie and the comforting; the ghosts never fully eclipse the pleasures of food, friendship, and care.
And the food, I loved the food. Webb’s descriptions add warmth and grounding to the story, making the haunting feel lived-in rather than purely frightening. The dogs, too, are a joy. They provide companionship, intuition, and a sense of life continuing forward, even as the past pushes its way back in.
The Stroke of Winter understands that haunting isn’t just about fear, it’s about memory, grief, and what remains when people and eras pass on. It’s a perfect choice for readers who enjoy ghost stories with heart, history, and a strong sense of place.
