A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Writing the bittersweet life of my grandmother, Ella.

A short summary:

Sea of Memories unfolds as a granddaughter reflects on the life of her grandmother, Ella, tracing a love story shaped by wartime loss, devotion, and the quiet sacrifices that define an entire lifetime. Through memory and storytelling, Ella’s past comes alive: youth interrupted by war, love forged in hardship, and a marriage rooted in constancy rather than convenience.

As the narrator pieces together Ella’s story, the novel becomes both an act of remembrance and a tribute—exploring how love endures through separation, grief, and the slow passing of years. It is a gentle meditation on what it means to choose one person again and again, even when life tests that choice.

My favorite quote from the book:

"As you well know yourself, you can't always choose what life throws at you. But you always have a choice in how you deal with it."
- Fiona Valpy, Sea of Memories

Questions to ponder while reading:

Has your life ever been altered by things you can't control?

What would you do if you got a second chance?

My review:

This is a hot-chocolate-and-warm-blanket kind of book, and it knows exactly what it’s doing. Sea of Memories is unapologetically sentimental, warmly nostalgic, and deeply affectionate toward the idea of lifelong love.

Yes, it’s sappy, and delightfully so. Fiona Valpy writes with sincerity, leaning into emotion rather than irony, making this an easy and immersive read. The joy of the novel lies not in surprise, but in recognition: the ache of missed chances, the comfort of shared memories, and the quiet heroism of staying when staying is hard.

At its core, this is a love story about devotion rather than drama. The idea of giving up a soulmate—even under unbearable circumstances—feels unthinkable here, and Valpy invites the reader to linger in that belief.

Sea of Memories won’t challenge your worldview, but it will wrap you in it, and sometimes, that’s exactly the book you need.
