A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Brother Cadfael and the mystery of the murdered merchant.

A short summary:

Saint Peter’s Fair brings Brother Cadfael into the lively chaos of Shrewsbury’s annual fair, where merchants, pilgrims, and opportunists gather under the promise of commerce and celebration. When a visiting merchant is murdered amid the festivities, the abbey’s temporary peace is shattered.

As Cadfael investigates, the fair’s bustle becomes both cover and catalyst, masking greed, envy, and long-simmering grudges. Peters deftly uses the crowded setting to heighten suspense, showing how quickly order dissolves when money, ambition, and secrecy collide.

My favorite quote from the book:

"The manifold gifts of God are there to be delighted in; to fall short of joy would be ingratitude."
-Ellis Peters, Saint Peter's Fair

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you trust in the Lord?

How many pairs of gloves does a lady really need?

My review:

This is so much fun in a book.

Murder, mayhem, and monks may sound improbable, but Ellis Peters makes it feel inevitable. The fair setting adds energy and color, giving the mystery a livelier pace while still grounding it in Cadfael’s calm, thoughtful presence.

The plot moves briskly, the characters are vivid, and the tension never overstays its welcome. Cadfael’s insight once again lies in his understanding of people, their desires, fears, and capacity for self-deception.

I read this straight through in one sitting, smiling most of the way. This is historical mystery comfort reading at its absolute best.
