A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
One violent act sets everything in motion, and nothing that follows can undo it. After Charlie is killed, the lives connected to him begin to unravel in ways both calculated and chaotic. What seems like a single decision quickly metastasizes into a web of lies, betrayals, and desperation.
As each character struggles to protect themselves, the truth becomes more dangerous than the crime itself. Past grievances surface, loyalties dissolve, and moral lines blur until nearly everyone is standing on unstable ground. The Last Thing She Ever Did is a relentless examination of how one secret can poison every relationship it touches.

My review of the book:
This is a deeply frustrating book, and that’s meant as a compliment.
Gregg Olsen crafts a story filled with deeply unlikable characters, each making selfish, destructive choices in the aftermath of violence. I honestly couldn’t decide which character I hated the most—and that moral ambiguity fuels the tension from start to finish.
The novel thrives on deception. Lies compound, truths are weaponized, and the hope for redemption feels perpetually just out of reach. I kept reading not because I trusted the characters, but because I needed consequences to land.
I couldn’t wait for a happy ending…
and wasn’t at all sure anyone deserved one.
Dark, emotionally charged, and compulsively readable.
