A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Monk’s Hood finds Brother Cadfael investigating a deeply personal crime: the poisoning of a guest using a medicinal preparation crafted within the abbey itself. What appears at first to be a simple act of malice quickly becomes a troubling inquiry into misplaced trust, jealousy, and the misuse of knowledge meant to heal.
As Cadfael traces the source of the poison, he must confront the uncomfortable truth that evil does not always arrive from outside the cloister. Peters skillfully uses the enclosed monastic setting to explore how resentment and ambition can fester even in communities founded on discipline and faith.

My review:
I have officially become the biggest Cadfael fan.
Monk’s Hood is a good, clean murder mystery with surprising emotional weight. The plot is tightly woven, the stakes intimate, and the pacing just brisk enough to keep pages turning late into the night.
What makes this entry stand out is its moral complexity. Cadfael isn’t just solving a puzzle; he’s navigating grief, responsibility, and the burden of knowing too much about human nature. The fact that the crime involves medicine, healing, and trust gives the mystery a sharper edge.
I couldn’t put it down. This is Cadfael at his most compassionate and perceptive, and Peters at the height of her powers.
