A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review.
A short summary:
White Noise by Don DeLillo is a darkly comic novel set in suburban America, where everyday life is saturated by media, consumerism, and an unrelenting awareness of mortality. The story centers on Jack Gladney, a professor of Hitler studies, whose carefully managed routines are disrupted by an “Airborne Toxic Event” that forces his family to confront the possibility of death in concrete terms.
As Jack grapples with fear, information overload, and a culture obsessed with catastrophe, the novel explores how modern society processes danger, not through understanding, but through spectacle. DeLillo blends satire with unease, turning shopping malls, academic conferences, and news reports into symbols of distraction and denial.

My review:
White Noise is an incisive examination of the sensationalism and noise that define modern life. DeLillo captures how fear is amplified, packaged, and consumed, often replacing genuine reflection with rehearsed responses and buzzwords.
The novel invites readers to imagine themselves in Jack’s place: What would we do when danger stops being abstract? Would we act, panic, or simply absorb more information? The absurdity of Jack’s academic focus, especially his continued devotion to Hitler studies, underscores the book’s critique of intellectual detachment and moral numbness.
Uncomfortable, ironic, and unsettlingly familiar, White Noise feels as relevant now as when it was published.
