A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of The Middle Ages by Henry Freeman alongside a misty landscape introducing a short summary and review.

A good overview of the period between the Roman Empire and the Renaissance.

A short summary:

The Middle Ages by Henry Freeman provides a broad, accessible overview of the period spanning the fall of the Roman Empire to the dawn of the Renaissance.

Rather than treating the Middle Ages as a single, static era, the book highlights how societies across Europe evolved politically, economically, technologically, and culturally over nearly a millennium. Freeman touches on the rise of feudal systems, the influence of the Church, technological advances, and shifting social structures that laid the groundwork for the modern world.

The book emphasizes continuity as much as change, showing the Middle Ages not as a “dark” interruption of progress, but as a complex and formative period in its own right.

My favorite quote from the book:

"This period of time is so shrouded in mystery that it's often difficult to discern where truth ends, and mystery begins."
- Henry Freeman, The Middle Ages

Quote by Henry Freeman about the mystery of the Middle Ages displayed over a misty mountain landscape.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Did you realize that Greek learning wasn't rediscovered until the 11th Century?

Did you realize how instrumental Charlemagne was to education?

My review:

This is a good overview of an extremely long and often misunderstood time period.

Freeman does a commendable job of distilling centuries of change into clear, manageable sections that focus on the most important developments. While necessarily selective, the book highlights political organization, everyday life, and technological progress in a way that maintains coherence.

One of the more interesting aspects is how it quietly corrects assumptions about medieval innovation. Small details, like the actual timeline of technologies many of us assume are ancient, serve as reminders that historical progress rarely happens when or how we expect.

This book works well as a foundation or refresher, particularly for readers looking to place more specialized medieval histories into a broader context.
