A political marriage challenges Roman law during an investigation into divine teaching.

A short summary:

The Centurion’s Wife by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke is a historical novel set in the Roman Empire during the early days of Christianity. The story centers on a politically motivated marriage that forces two very different people into close proximity just as Roman law, personal loyalty, and emerging religious ideas begin to collide.

As a Roman centurion becomes entangled in an investigation surrounding reports of divine teaching, the marriage becomes more than a social arrangement. Questions of justice, truth, and faith surface against a backdrop of rigid legal systems and cultural expectations. The novel explores how personal conviction can quietly challenge empire-level authority without ever tipping into spectacle.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Do not bind yourself with fear over what may never come."
-Bunn/Oke, The Centurion's Wife

Quote reading “Do not bind yourself with fear over what may never come” by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke over a soft, stone-textured background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Has the search for truth ever changed your perspective?

What do you search for?

My review:

The Centurion’s Wife is an enjoyable and engaging read, offering historical drama without heaviness or excess. What surprised me most was how restrained the storytelling is; the novel avoids the clichés often associated with faith-based fiction.

The story allows its themes to unfold naturally through character and circumstance rather than instruction. Because of that, it feels accessible even to readers who don’t share the book’s religious framework. The political and legal tensions of Roman society provide enough intrigue to carry the narrative on their own.

This is a light but thoughtful novel, entertaining, sincere, and far more balanced than its premise might suggest.
