A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Thomas's thoughts on philosophy, current culture, and God were discovered during his time in the desert.

A short summary:

Thoughts in Solitude by Thomas Merton is a collection of meditative reflections written during Merton’s time of increased solitude as a Trappist monk. Drawing from philosophy, scripture, and keen observation of modern culture, these essays explore the relationship between silence, self-knowledge, and God.

Rather than offering structured arguments, Merton writes in fragments and contemplations—thoughts shaped by prayer, wilderness, and sustained attention. The “desert” in this book is both literal and spiritual: a place where distractions fall away and truth is encountered slowly, often uncomfortably, but honestly.

My favorite quote from the book:

"...man knows when he has found his vocation when he stops thinking about how to live and begins to live."
- Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude

Quote from Thoughts in Solitude by Thomas Merton about discovering vocation through living rather than striving, set against a desert landscape

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do books speak to you?

Do you enjoy silence?

My review:

Thoughts in Solitude is one of those rare books that feels like it finds the reader at exactly the right moment. Merton’s reflections are deep without being forceful, probing without being loud. He writes quietly, trusting that the reader will meet him with equal attentiveness.

This is not a book to rush. Its insights unfold slowly, inviting pauses rather than conclusions. Merton’s observations on culture, vocation, and interior freedom feel remarkably current, even decades later, especially in a world saturated with noise and urgency.

Reading this book naturally stirs a longing for simplicity—for desert spaces, silence, and intentional withdrawal. Whether or not one ever undertakes a literal pilgrimage, Thoughts in Solitude makes a compelling case for carving out interior deserts where clarity, humility, and communion with God can take root.
