A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The tragedy of Elphaba.

A short summary:

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West reframes a familiar fairy tale as a political and personal tragedy. Told largely through the life of Elphaba, the so-called Wicked Witch, the story dismantles the easy binaries of good and evil that define The Wizard of Oz.

In this retelling, Oz is a place shaped by power, propaganda, and fear of the other. Elphaba’s sharp intellect, moral stubbornness, and refusal to conform place her at odds with the state, its institutions, and even those closest to her. What history labels “wicked” is revealed instead as dissent, conscience, and resistance in a world that punishes difference.

My favorite quote of the book:

"No one controls your destiny. Even at the worst, there is always a choice."
- Gregory Maguire, Wicked

Quote by Gregory Maguire reading “No one controls your destiny” set against dark smoke imagery.

Questions to ponder while reading:

What did you think of Oscar?

What would you do for a pair of shoes?

My review:

This is a brilliant and unsettling twist on an old story.

I am firmly on Team Elphaba. Her journey is not about villainy, but about what happens when integrity collides with authority. Wicked asks uncomfortable questions about who gets to write history, who benefits from obedience, and how easily societies justify cruelty once someone has been labeled a threat.

Oppression is always ugly, and Maguire never lets the reader look away from its mechanisms—bureaucratic, cultural, and personal. This is not a comforting book, nor is it meant to be. It replaces nostalgia with complexity, and certainty with moral unease.

A compelling, thought-provoking novel that lingers long after the final page, forcing readers to reconsider how quickly “wicked” becomes a convenient lie.
