A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
In Amores, D. H. Lawrence gathers poems that examine love in its physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. These verses focus on intimacy, desire, vulnerability, and the deep attentiveness required to truly connect with another person.
Rather than idealizing love, Lawrence presents it as lived experience, sometimes tender, sometimes uneasy, always immediate. His language is direct and sensuous, favoring presence over ornament, and inviting readers to encounter love as something elemental and honest.

My review:
I often find I prefer Lawrence’s poetry to his novels, and Amores confirms why. In these poems, his intensity is focused rather than overwhelming. Each piece feels attentive, embodied, and unafraid of emotional exposure.
The collection is infinitely quotable because Lawrence writes in lines that feel discovered rather than constructed. His observations arrive plainly, but they linger. He doesn’t explain love; he watches it, listens to it, and trusts it to reveal itself.
At its best, Amores reminds us that love is beautiful, not because it is perfect, but because it is alive. These poems reward stillness and rereading, offering moments of quiet recognition that feel both personal and universal.
