An underwater adventure aboard the Nautilus.

A short summary:

When Professor Aronnax, his loyal servant Conseil, and the harpooner Ned Land set out to hunt a mysterious sea monster, they are instead captured by the enigmatic Captain Nemo aboard his extraordinary submarine, the Nautilus. What begins as a scientific expedition turns into a prolonged underwater captivity, and a breathtaking tour of the world’s oceans. Coral forests, sunken ships, Antarctic ice, pearl dives, giant squid battles,  Verne delivers spectacle after spectacle beneath the waves.

Yet beneath the adventure lies something darker. Captain Nemo is brilliant, cultured, and deeply wounded. He has turned his back on the surface world and its politics, choosing isolation and technological mastery over humanity. As the Nautilus drifts further into obsession and vengeance, Aronnax must decide whether wonder is enough to justify remaining under the sea.

My favorite quote from the book:

"To the poet, a pearl is a tear from the sea."
- Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Questions to ponder while reading the book:

What do you suppose happened to Captain Nemo?

How was Conseil so calm?

My review:

Verne understood something essential: the ocean is both escape and abyss. I completely understand the allure of the Nautilus. A self-sustaining vessel filled with books, art, innovation, and freedom from society? Tempting. Very tempting.

But Nemo is also proof that brilliance without balance becomes exile. The book is steampunk fun, yes, but it’s also a meditation on isolation, revenge, and whether cutting yourself off from the world makes you powerful… or merely alone.

And the descriptions! Verne makes you want to see that ocean,  not a postcard ocean, but the strange, luminous deep. It’s adventurous, imaginative, and surprisingly philosophical beneath all the giant squid and diving suits.

Still holds up. Still wondrous.
