A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The Odyssey of the Hares.

A short summary:

Watership Down is, quite simply, the Odyssey of the hares. What begins as a desperate flight from destruction becomes an epic journey across the English countryside, following a band of rabbits in search of safety, home, and freedom.

Along the way, the story builds a rich mythology, complete with legends, language, politics, and faith, transforming what could have been a simple animal tale into a sweeping heroic narrative. It is a story about leadership, courage, survival, and the cost of building a society that values strength without mercy.

My favorite quote from the book:

"We all have to meet our match sometime or other."
- Richard Adams

Questions to ponder while reading:

Did you cry at the end?

Which Warren would you live in?

My review:

This book is much deeper than I ever imagined. Beneath the surface of talking rabbits lies a profound meditation on power, tyranny, community, and sacrifice.

And yes, the cartoon gave me nightmares. It turns out that instinct wasn’t wrong. Watership Down is not a gentle children’s story; it is an unflinching look at danger and resilience, made all the more powerful by the fact that its heroes are small and vulnerable.

Long live Bigwig. His loyalty, bravery, and moral clarity elevate this story from adventure to legend. This is a novel that stays with you, not because it scares you, but because it asks what kind of courage truly matters when survival is on the line.
