A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Where did the frogs go?

A short summary of the book:

The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert examines the ongoing mass extinction event driven not by asteroids or volcanoes, but by human activity.

Kolbert travels the globe, rainforests, coral reefs, caves, and laboratories, documenting vanishing species and unraveling the science behind biodiversity collapse. From disappearing frogs to bleached coral and disrupted ecosystems, she shows how climate change, habitat destruction, invasive species, and human expansion are rapidly reshaping life on Earth.

The book situates the present moment within Earth’s deep history, explaining how past mass extinctions unfolded—and why this one is unique. Unlike previous events, the cause is conscious, cumulative, and preventable.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Extinction rates soar, and the texture of life changes."
- Elizabeth Kolbert, The Sixth Extinction

Questions to ponder:

Seriously, where did the frogs go?

Did you realize how much impact you had?

My review:

This book leaves you asking questions you can’t easily shake.

I found myself wondering: Can we stop this? And just as troubling, why aren’t we more focused on it? The evidence Kolbert presents is methodical and restrained, which makes it all the more devastating. She doesn’t exaggerate; she documents.

Perhaps the most unsettling realization is the personal one: what will quietly disappear within our lifetimes? What species, sounds, or landscapes will we miss without realizing they were ever temporary?

The Sixth Extinction is not alarmist, but it is deeply unsettling. It asks readers to confront responsibility—not abstractly, but urgently. This is not a distant problem for future generations. It is happening now, and we are participants whether we acknowledge it or not.
