A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A life spent seeing red.
A short summary:
Sam Hell is born with an unusual condition that marks him, literally and socially, from the moment he enters the world. As he grows up, that difference becomes both a burden and a catalyst, shaping how others see him and how he learns to see himself. This novel follows Sam from childhood into adulthood, tracing the long arc of a life defined by resilience, compassion, and the slow discovery that what once felt like a curse may, in fact, be a calling.
My favorite quote from the book:
"You're only a square peg if you allow yourself to be treated like one."
- Robert Dugoni, The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell
Questions to ponder while reading:
What makes you different?
Is your mother your champion?
My review:
This is a deeply human story about endurance, identity, and the quiet courage it takes to keep going when life feels unfair. Dugoni excels at showing how character is forged through adversity, and Sam’s journey is both painful and hopeful in equal measure. At its heart, the novel argues that our trials do not diminish us, they refine us, and that faith, whether spiritual or simply faith in meaning itself, can be a powerful anchor when the world is unkind. I found it moving without being sentimental, and ultimately affirming in the way it insists that grace often arrives disguised as struggle.
