A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Three Daughters is a sweeping, matrilineal family saga set in Palestine, tracing the lives of women whose identities are shaped by land, tradition, upheaval, and inheritance. Through multiple generations, the novel explores how family bonds endure amid political tension, cultural change, and personal loss.
The story moves between private domestic spaces and the wider historical forces pressing in on everyday life. Love, duty, faith, and survival are passed down from mother to daughter, creating a portrait of womanhood rooted in continuity, resilience, and remembrance.

My review:
This is a long, immersive saga that asks the reader to fully commit to its rhythms and history. There is a tremendous amount of cultural and historical material here, and at its best, the novel offers a textured look at women’s lives shaped by circumstance and tradition.
At times, however, the narrative leans heavily into explicit sexual detail, which felt overextended rather than illuminating. Those moments occasionally distracted from what I found most compelling: the generational relationships and the historical backdrop itself.
That said, Three Daughters is undeniably ambitious. It tells a story of endurance through lineage and place, and it will appeal most to readers who enjoy multi-generational epics rich with history and familial complexity, even when the storytelling can be a bit uneven.
