Magdalena and the mystery of the witch.

A short summary:

The Hangman’s Daughter is set in seventeenth-century Bavaria, where superstition and fear govern daily life and accusations of witchcraft can be fatal. When a young woman is found murdered, and suspicion turns toward dark magic, Magdalena, the daughter of the town executioner, becomes entwined in a dangerous investigation.

Alongside her father, Magdalena navigates a world shaped by rigid hierarchy, brutal justice, and deep mistrust of outsiders. As the mystery unfolds, it becomes clear that the true danger lies not in witchcraft but in human greed, power, and the willingness to believe convenient lies.

My favorite quote from the book:

"If you want to know who is responsible for anything, ask who benefits from it."

Questions to ponder while reading:

How much does superstition guide your judgment?

Can someone be pure evil?

My review:

This is an engrossing mystery that demands attention.

Pötzsch does not simplify history for ease of reading, and that’s part of the novel’s strength. The book is richly detailed, steeped in the customs, cruelty, and constraints of its era. Every scene feels grounded in lived reality, even when the pacing slows under the weight of detail.

The investigation itself is compelling, but what truly stands out is the social context. Justice is harsh, superstition is weaponized, and moral clarity is rare. Magdalena’s intelligence and resilience shine precisely because of the world she must navigate.

This is a well-researched, immersive read that rewards patience. If you enjoy historical mysteries that fully inhabit their time period, The Hangman’s Daughter delivers in depth and atmosphere.
