A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
The Bloodletter’s Daughter is set in 17th-century Prague and follows the daughter of a skilled bloodletter who is called upon to cure the mysterious illness of Don Julius, the volatile son of Emperor Rudolf II. What begins as a medical task rooted in leeches and early science quickly expands into a tangle of court intrigue, superstition, forbidden knowledge, and danger.
As secrets emerge within the imperial court, the story blends medicine, mystery, and history, revealing how fragile the line between reason and madness was in a world still balancing alchemy, faith, and emerging science.

My review:
This is an easy story to fall into, historical fiction at its most fun. The pacing is lively, the setting richly imagined, and the medical details are just fascinating enough without becoming overwhelming.
What I enjoyed most was the way Lafferty leaned into the era's strangeness. Bloodletting, court politics, and whispered rumors all coexist naturally, creating a world that feels both dangerous and compelling. It’s the kind of novel that keeps you turning pages because you genuinely want to know what comes next.
And yes, I, too, am intrigued by the Voynich Manuscript. Any story that even brushes up against one of history’s great unsolved mysteries earns bonus points in my book.
The Bloodletter’s Daughter is smart, entertaining, and immersive—a great reminder that historical fiction doesn’t have to be heavy to be satisfying.
