Carl cooks up something on the Nightmare Express

A Short Summary:

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook is the third installment in Matt Dinniman's wildly imaginative Dungeon Crawler Carl series. As Carl, Princess Donut, and their increasingly eccentric allies continue their fight for survival, they find themselves navigating the deadly and unpredictable Nightmare Express. Like every level of the dungeon, the train presents its own unique challenges, bizarre rules, and opportunities for spectacular disaster.

As the competition grows more dangerous, Carl gains access to the mysterious Anarchist's Cookbook, a collection of knowledge, strategies, and secrets left behind by previous crawlers. The discoveries in the book reveal more about the dungeon's true nature and the forces manipulating events behind the scenes.

Filled with outrageous action, dark humor, and escalating stakes, the novel continues to expand the bizarre universe Dinniman has created while deepening the relationships among its unforgettable cast of characters.

My Favorite Quote from the Book:

"There is consolation in dying in the pursuit of justice, no matter how small or big that death is."

What is your responsibility toward others?

My Review:

I am completely on Team Carl at this point. Every book in this series somehow manages to become more ridiculous, more entertaining, and more compelling than the last. On the surface, The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook is pure science fiction and fantasy chaos, but beneath the explosions, monsters, and absurd situations is a surprisingly thoughtful story.

One of the things I appreciate most about this series is the world-building. The dungeon is simultaneously hilarious and horrifying, operating according to rules that are often insane but internally consistent. Dinniman constantly introduces new creatures, mechanics, factions, and challenges without ever making the world feel repetitive. The Nightmare Express may be one of the most entertaining settings in the series so far.

The humor remains one of the book's biggest strengths. Carl and Princess Donut remain one of the most enjoyable partnerships in modern science fiction. Their interactions are often laugh-out-loud funny, but they also provide the emotional core that keeps the story grounded amidst all the chaos. The absurdity never feels random; it serves both the comedy and the larger story.

What continues to surprise me, however, is how often these books ask genuinely philosophical questions. Questions about power, justice, sacrifice, free will, entertainment, and what people owe one another appear beneath the surface of the action. Dinniman manages to explore serious ideas without slowing the pace or becoming preachy, a difficult balance to strike.

Overall, The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook is simply tremendous fun. It is fast-paced, imaginative, hilarious, and occasionally thought-provoking in ways readers might not expect. If you've enjoyed the first two books in the series, this installment delivers everything that made those novels successful while raising the stakes even higher. I can't wait to see what madness Carl and Princess Donut encounter next.
