A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Graphic featuring The Hobbit book cover by J.R.R. Tolkien with text reading “A Short Summary and Review” over a mountainous fantasy landscape.
Bilbo's adventure to find a treasure that dwarves and a wizard convinced him he wanted.

A short summary:

The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving hobbit whose quiet life is interrupted when a wizard and a company of dwarves invite him on an unexpected quest. Reluctantly, and somewhat mysteriously, Bilbo agrees to leave the Shire in search of a long-lost treasure guarded by the dragon Smaug.

Along the way, Bilbo encounters trolls, elves, goblins, riddles in the dark, and dangers far beyond anything he imagined. What begins as a simple adventure becomes a journey of growth, courage, and self-discovery. Tolkien gently reminds readers that heroism often begins not with strength or ambition, but with curiosity and a willingness to step beyond the familiar.

My favorite quote from the book:

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
- JRR Tolkien, The Hobbit

J.R.R. Tolkien quote reading “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world” over a misty forest scene.

Questions to ponder while:

What do you treasure?

Have you ever wanted to go on an epic journey?

My review:

A forever-favorite tale, rich with charm and wisdom.

This book is pure nostalgia—in the best sense of the word. The Hobbit feels like a story meant to be told aloud, filled with riddles, rhymes, songs, and moments of quiet humor that linger long after the final page.

At its heart, this is a book about treasure, but not just gold. What do you value? Comfort or courage? Safety or wonder? Bilbo’s transformation is subtle yet profound, shaped not by glory but by kindness, cleverness, and compassion.

Have you ever wanted to go on an epic journey? The Hobbit captures that longing perfectly, the pull of the road, the thrill of discovery, and the realization that you may return home changed. Warm, imaginative, and endlessly rereadable, it’s no wonder this story has endured for generations.
