A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Graphic featuring The Fellowship of the Ring book cover by J.R.R. Tolkien with text reading “A Short Summary and Review” over a snowy mountain path.
Frodo begins the quest to rid the world of Bilbo's ring.

A short summary:

The Fellowship of the Ring begins the long journey that will decide the fate of Middle-earth. What starts as a quiet life in the Shire becomes a perilous quest when Frodo Baggins inherits a dangerous ring, one that holds the power to corrupt, dominate, and destroy.

As Frodo sets out to rid the world of Bilbo’s ring, he is joined by companions from vastly different lands and races, each carrying their own histories, loyalties, and fears. Together, they form the Fellowship, bound not by ambition but by necessity. Tolkien carefully unfolds a world where ancient evils stir again, and where even the smallest decisions ripple outward into history.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Not all of those who wander are lost."
- JRR Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien quote reading “Not all those who wander are lost” over snowy ground marked with a trail of footprints.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you get involved in things that are not your responsibility?

How important is food to you?

My review:

An epic that begins with ordinary choices.

This book opens with a deceptively simple question: Do you get involved in things that aren’t technically your responsibility? Frodo never seeks heroism, yet responsibility finds him anyway. Tolkien suggests that moral duty is rarely convenient, and often falls to those least prepared for it.

There is also a gentler wisdom here. Food, comfort, rest, and fellowship matter. The Shire’s love of meals and routine isn’t frivolous; it’s what makes the journey worth taking in the first place. Tolkien understands that what we fight for is often small, familiar, and deeply human.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the beginning of a vast epic, rich with songs, stories, sagas, and histories woven into every chapter. It moves deliberately, inviting the reader to linger, listen, and remember. How could you go wrong? This is the foundation of a story built to endure.
