A scholarly look at the Son of Man through the writings of the Gospels.

A short summary:

The Case for Jesus by Brant Pitre presents a rigorous, scholarly examination of Jesus Christ through the historical and textual evidence found in the Gospels. Addressing modern academic skepticism, Pitre carefully evaluates claims that the Gospels are unreliable, anonymous, or theologically invented long after Jesus’s life.

Drawing on biblical scholarship, early Jewish writings, Church history, and modern critical methods, the book argues that the Gospels are rooted firmly in eyewitness testimony and first-century Jewish context. Pitre examines Jesus’s self-understanding, the meaning of titles like “Son of Man,” and the historical credibility of Jesus’s words and actions.

My favorite quote from the book:

"I found that the problem wasn't with Jesus; it was with me."

Questions to ponder while reading:

How much do you know about early Christian history?

Do you struggle with the truth of Jesus' divinity?

My review:

The Case for Jesus is thoroughly researched and intellectually satisfying. Pitre writes with scholarly precision while remaining accessible to the thoughtful non-specialist, making complex academic debates understandable without oversimplifying them.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is how directly it challenges widely circulated misconceptions about the Gospels—particularly the idea that Christian beliefs about Jesus developed centuries later or were imposed by early Church politics. Pitre dismantles these claims methodically, grounding his arguments in textual evidence and historical continuity.

More than an academic exercise, this book has the power to deepen faith. By showing that belief in Jesus is not opposed to reason or history, The Case for Jesus strengthens confidence in the Gospels as trustworthy witnesses. It is an excellent read for anyone who wants to engage questions of faith seriously, thoughtfully, and without fear of scrutiny.
