A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The history you didn't learn in high school.

A short summary:

Interesting Stories for Curious People is a collection of short, engaging historical anecdotes that highlight the strange, surprising, and often overlooked corners of history. Bill O’Neill pulls together stories you likely never encountered in a classroom, moments that are too odd, too specific, or too inconvenient to make it into standard textbooks.

Rather than offering a grand historical narrative, the book invites curiosity. Each entry stands on its own, making it easy to dip in and out while still gaining a broader appreciation for how messy, humorous, and unexpected the past can be.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Writers, even historians, who claim to be objective, still have opinions, which can sometimes turn into an agenda."
-Bill O'Neil, Interesting Stories for Curious People

Muted-toned quote graphic reading “Writers, even historians, who claim to be objective, still have opinions, which can sometimes turn into an agenda,” attributed to Bill O’Neill.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Did you realize that about water?

Did you know about the New Madrid Fault?

My review:

This book is full of fun trivia, fascinating facts, and genuinely interesting stories. It’s the kind of collection that makes you pause mid-chapter just to say, “Wait—why didn’t I know this?”

What I enjoyed most was the variety. The stories range widely in topic and tone, making it feel more like a conversation with a well-read friend than a formal history lesson. It’s an engaging collection that never takes itself too seriously, yet still manages to teach you something new on nearly every page.

I learned a lot and enjoyed the process of learning. Interesting Stories for Curious People is proof that curiosity is often the best guide to understanding history.
