A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and ReviewGraphic featuring The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time book cover by Mark Haddon with text reading “A Short Summary and Review” against a dark urban night background.

An autistic mystery of lies, murder, and betrayal.

A short summary:

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a mystery told through the perspective of Christopher Boone, a neurodivergent teenager determined to solve the death of a neighbor’s dog. As Christopher applies logic, mathematics, and strict rules to uncover the truth, the investigation gradually reveals something more unsettling than the crime itself: a web of adult deception, broken trust, and betrayal.

What begins as a straightforward mystery becomes an examination of how lies, especially those told “for someone’s own good,” can fracture relationships. Christopher’s journey exposes not only what happened to the dog, but how profoundly adults can fail the children who depend on them.

My favorite quote from the book:

"I want my name to mean me."
- Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Quote by Mark Haddon reading “I want my name to mean me” displayed over a foggy nighttime street scene.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Is it ever ok to lie?

What do you think about Ed?

My review:

An emotionally accessible story with sharp moral edges.

This is an easy book to become invested in, largely because Christopher’s perspective is so clear and consistent. His commitment to truth stands in stark contrast to the adults around him, many of whom justify cruelty, dishonesty, or avoidance as necessity.

I have almost no sympathy for Ed. His failures are rooted not in confusion but in repeated choices to lie. Roger, too, is difficult to tolerate; his actions leave lasting damage that cannot be explained away. In contrast, Siobhan represents what responsible care actually looks like: patience, structure, honesty, and respect for Christopher’s autonomy.

Frequently challenged and often misread, this novel is not asking readers to pity Christopher; it asks them to examine themselves. Who is actually capable here? Who is trustworthy? And who benefits from withholding the truth?

Be a rebel. Read it.
