A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Rebuilding a life by embracing a culture.

A short summary:

Pierced by the Sun is a reflective, emotionally grounded novel about rebuilding a fractured life through connection to place, to memory, and to culture. After a profound loss, the protagonist turns toward Mexico not as an escape but as a space of healing, where traditions, relationships, and daily rituals offer a way forward.

Rather than a straightforward narrative of recovery, the novel unfolds as a meditation on grief, resilience, and belonging. Mexico itself becomes both setting and guide, reminding the reader that healing often happens slowly, through immersion in something older and larger than individual pain.

My favorite quote from the book:

"One is never truly alone, even when our only company is our thoughts, because what are thoughts if not the memory of interactions with others?"
- Laura Esquivel, Pierced by the Sun

Quote by Laura Esquivel about solitude, thoughts, and human connection displayed over a soft yellow sun-themed background.

Questions to ponder while reading:

What are your demons?

Does simplicity heal?

My review:

This is a gentle but deeply affecting book, one that leans into the philosophy of “just for today.” That idea, so simple and so necessary, anchors the story and makes its emotional journey feel honest rather than forced.

Reading it, I felt both affection and sorrow for Mexico, especially in light of its ongoing struggle with the narcos. Esquivel does not ignore fear or instability; instead, she acknowledges them as part of the landscape of modern life. What resonated most with me is the book’s permission to be afraid, to stumble, and to take setbacks seriously without treating them as failures.

Pierced by the Sun reminds us that healing is not linear, and that survival itself can be an act of courage. It is a quiet, compassionate book, one that stays with you in small, steady ways.
