A Short Summary:
Nirav leaves his quiet home with a simple goal: reach Bernside and compete in a prestigious fighting tournament. A gifted young swordsman who does not speak, he wants to test his abilities and prove himself beyond the familiar boundaries of home. Along the way, he meets Mikela, and what begins as a relatively straightforward journey quickly becomes much more dangerous.
After the pair become involved in protecting a mysterious ancient Key, they find themselves pursued by criminals and drawn into a larger conflict involving the winged Aialii, forgotten ruins, and a powerful enemy named Grey. The Key is eventually revealed to be connected to ancient Neftarii technology that can manipulate the world itself.
What began as a journey to a tournament becomes a fight over technology powerful enough to reshape entire landscapes. Nirav must rely not only on his skill with a sword, but on Mikela, Kerrion, Koros, and others he meets along the way as he discovers that bravery often has much less to do with being fearless than with continuing forward while afraid.

My Review:
Gabriel Palmer has built a vast world in Deflection, filled with different peoples, places, histories, factions, creatures, technologies, and side encounters. At the center of it all is Nirav, who leaves home to enter a tournament, is entrusted with something far more important than he initially understands, and gradually finds himself pulled into a conflict much larger than anything he intended to face. I especially enjoyed the way the novel shifts from conventional fantasy into science fantasy. What first appears to be magic increasingly reveals itself as the remnants of extraordinarily advanced ancient technology.
Nirav also grew on me as a protagonist. His inability, or reluctance, to speak could easily have become a gimmick, but instead it becomes central to his development. He has spent much of his life allowing other people’s reactions to limit how he communicates, and the journey forces him to find other ways to connect. His friendship with Mikela gives the story warmth, while Kerrion and the other Aialii help expand Nirav’s understanding of courage, strength, and what it means to face the unknown.
The novel is ambitious, at times almost too ambitious, but a strong adventure runs beneath all that complexity. By the end, the tournament that once seemed so important feels almost small compared with everything Nirav has faced. Deflection ultimately becomes a story about adapting when life refuses to follow the path you planned, and about meeting whatever comes toward you as well as you can.
