Defending a "sheltered" priest from murder.

A short summary:

The 7th Canon by Robert Dugoni is a fast-moving legal thriller centered on the defense of a sheltered Catholic priest accused of murder. As the case unfolds, attorney David Sloane is drawn into a web of institutional secrecy, childhood trauma, and deeply buried truth.

What initially appears to be a straightforward criminal defense quickly becomes far more complex. Dugoni uses the courtroom as an entry point into broader questions about responsibility, protection, and the lasting consequences of abuse. The novel moves fluidly between investigation and trial, keeping tension high while steadily revealing the human cost beneath the legal drama.

My favorite quote from the book:

"The past is always the highest peak, and the hardest to scale."
- Robert Dugoni, The 7th Canon

Quote reading “The past is always the highest peak, and the hardest to scale” by Robert Dugoni over a purple-toned interior scene.

Questions to ponder while reading:

How dedicated are you to your job?

Do you believe wealth trumps justice?

My review:

The 7th Canon is an engaging, fast-paced legal thriller that held my attention from start to finish. Dugoni has a gift for pacing; the story never bogs down, even as it tackles emotionally heavy subject matter.

What elevates the novel is its underlying concern for children who fall through the cracks of systems meant to protect them. The story makes it difficult to ignore how many lives are shaped and damaged long before they ever enter a courtroom.

This is a compelling read with a strong moral pulse. It entertains, but it also presses readers to think about accountability, silence, and the societal obligation to do better for the most vulnerable.
