A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk – Short Summary and Review

How trauma affects our bodies and how we can treat it.

A short summary:

The Body Keeps the Score explores how trauma is stored not only in the mind, but in the body itself—shaping physical responses, emotional regulation, memory, and even identity. Drawing from decades of clinical research, neuroscience, and patient experience, van der Kolk explains how traumatic stress alters brain chemistry and nervous system functioning, often long after the original danger has passed. The book also examines a wide range of treatment approaches, from talk therapy and medication to body-based practices like yoga, EMDR, and neurofeedback, offering a hopeful framework for healing that honors the complexity of trauma rather than minimizing it.

My favorite quote from the book:

"As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself."

Questions to ponder while reading the book:

What has scared you?

How do you confront your pain?

My review:

This is an in-depth yet accessible exploration of the mind–body connection, written with both scientific rigor and deep compassion. Van der Kolk succeeds in explaining complex neurological processes in plain language without oversimplifying the reality of trauma. What makes the book especially powerful is its insistence that trauma responses are adaptive—not personal failures—and that healing often requires engaging the body, not just revisiting memories. While some sections are emotionally heavy, the book is ultimately informative, validating, and empowering, making it an essential read for anyone interested in psychology, mental health, or long-term healing.
