A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A haunting voyage into the darkness within every human soul.
A short summary:
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad follows Marlow, a sailor journeying deep into the Congo River basin, where he encounters the mysterious ivory trader, Kurtz. What begins as an adventure into the unknown becomes a chilling exploration of human greed, power, and moral decay. Through Kurtz’s descent into madness and cruelty, Conrad exposes the thin line between civilization and savagery.
My favorite Joseph Conrad quote from the book:
"It was written I should be loyal to the nightmare of my choice."

Questions to ponder while reading:
What is a savage?
What would you do for power?
My review:
Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is a profoundly important exploration of power, morality, and the fragility of civilization. Through the harrowing journey of Marlow and the enigmatic Kurtz, the novel confronts readers with acts that are often difficult to accept, forcing a reckoning with the consequences of imperialism and unchecked human ambition. Conrad masterfully blurs the boundaries between “civilized” and “savage,” compelling us to question who the true savages are. This unsettling and thought-provoking work remains as relevant today as it was at its publication, a stark reminder of humanity’s capacity for darkness.
