Protecting a stepdaughter from a parent's dark past.

A short summary:

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave is a suspenseful domestic thriller centered on Hannah Hall, whose quiet life is upended when her husband disappears, leaving only a cryptic note urging her to protect his teenage daughter, Bailey.

As federal authorities begin asking questions, Hannah and Bailey are forced into an uneasy alliance, digging into a past neither of them fully understands. What begins as a mystery about one man’s disappearance evolves into a deeper story about identity, deception, and the lengths a parent will go to shield a child from dangerous truths. Each revelation peels back another layer, showing that the details Hannah clung to may never have been the whole story.

My favorite quote from the book:

"The details are not the whole story."

Questions to ponder while reading:

What would you do to protect your family?

Do you keep secrets from your spouse?

My review:

The Last Thing He Told Me is a fun, propulsive thriller that keeps the pages turning with steady revelations and emotional stakes. Laura Dave excels at blending family dynamics with suspense, making the relationship between Hannah and Bailey just as compelling as the mystery itself.

The story is packed with twists and turns that are satisfying without becoming convoluted, and the pacing makes it ideal for readers who want tension without exhaustion. While it doesn’t reinvent the thriller genre, it delivers exactly what it promises: intrigue, momentum, and a rewarding payoff.

This is the kind of book that disappears in an afternoon,  engaging, clever, and just unsettling enough to keep you guessing until the end.
