A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review
A short summary:
Kate Bennett vanished from her life when her children were young, abandoning her family to follow a charismatic, cult-like faith that promised meaning and belonging. Years later, she returns—physically present but emotionally fractured, bringing with her a legacy of trauma that refuses to stay in the past.
As Kate struggles to reconnect with the children she left behind, the story exposes the devastating cost of belief taken to extremes. Through fractured memories and present-day reckoning, When She Returned examines how indoctrination reshapes identity, erodes trust, and leaves lasting scars on everyone caught in its orbit.
This is not just a story about cults, it’s about the ripple effects of abandonment, devotion, and the impossible task of rebuilding what was willingly destroyed.

My review:
This is a deeply unsettling psychological thriller, especially for parents.
Lucinda Berry explores motherhood through an unflinching lens, asking uncomfortable questions about responsibility, belief, and the limits of forgiveness. The story is dark, emotionally heavy, and at times difficult to read, not because it feels unrealistic, but because it feels frighteningly plausible.
There were moments where I couldn’t believe what I was reading…
and then moments where I absolutely could.
When She Returned succeeds because it resists easy answers. It doesn’t excuse the damage done, nor does it offer a neat resolution. Instead, it forces the reader to sit with the consequences of choices made in the name of faith and belonging.
Disturbing, sobering, and hauntingly believable.
