A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Black and white image of Notre Dame Cathedral façade with the book cover of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and text reading “A Short Summary and Review.”

The sad story of Esmeralda and Quasimodo.

A short summary:

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a tragic, sweeping tale set in medieval Paris that follows the intertwined fates of Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer of Notre Dame, and Esmeralda, a beautiful Romani dancer whose kindness becomes her undoing. Victor Hugo weaves a story of obsession, injustice, and misplaced devotion, using the great cathedral itself as both setting and symbol, magnificent, looming, and indifferent to human suffering.

My favorite quote from the book:

"What men arrange, things disarrange."
-Victor Hugo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Black and white interior of Notre Dame Cathedral with gothic arches and chandeliers, overlaid with a Victor Hugo quote about order and disorder.

Questions to ponder while reading:

What will be your downfall?

How do you define kindness?

My review:

This is a book I love deeply, even though, or perhaps because, it refuses to offer comfort. Hugo’s version is far darker and more morally complex than the familiar animated adaptation, stripping away sentimentality in favor of raw human consequence. Quasimodo is tender, Esmeralda is doomed by the projections placed upon her, and nearly every character becomes trapped by desire, fear, or pride. The novel is a meditation on beauty and cruelty, grace and abandonment, and the hard truth that sometimes love does not save anyone. It is devastating, unforgettable, and unapologetically tragic.
