A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

A nightclub owner navigates the nosedive Shanghai took during World War II

A short summary:

The Last Rose of Shanghai follows a wealthy nightclub owner as her glittering world collapses under the weight of war. Set during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai in World War II, the novel traces how political upheaval, violence, and shifting power structures upend both personal lives and an entire city’s identity.

As survival becomes increasingly precarious, the story explores moral compromise, resilience, and the cost of endurance in a time when stability is an illusion. Through the eyes of a woman determined to protect what remains of her autonomy, the novel offers a deeply human account of a city, and a world in free fall.

My favorite quote from the book:

"A courteous tiger is still a tiger."

Questions to ponder while reading:

What sacrifices have you made for your family?

Where have you failed?

My review:

This is a compelling and eye-opening WWII novel set in a corner of history that is too often overlooked. Randel’s portrayal of wartime Shanghai is vivid and unsettling, capturing both the lingering glamour of a once-thriving city and the brutal realities of occupation.

The story is full of twists, turns, and sudden reversals, mirroring the instability of life during war. What resonated most, though, was the reminder that World War II was not confined to one region or experience—it was catastrophic everywhere, reshaping lives across the globe in deeply personal ways.

The Last Rose of Shanghai stands out for its perspective, momentum, and emotional weight. It’s an excellent choice for readers looking to expand their understanding of WWII beyond the familiar Western narratives.
