A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of The Martian by Andy Weir displayed over a Mars-themed background with review text.

Learning to live a life on Mars after being left behind.

A short summary:

When astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead and accidentally left behind on Mars, he must solve the unthinkable problem: how to survive entirely alone on a hostile planet with limited supplies, no rescue plan, and only his own ingenuity to rely on. The Martian is a survival story driven by science, stubborn hope, and problem-solving under impossible pressure. It’s less about space travel and more about what happens when intelligence, grit, and humor collide with absolute isolation.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped."
- Andy Weir, The Martian

Quote by Andy Weir reading “Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped” over a stylized view of Mars.

Questions to ponder while reading:

How much do you like potatoes?

Is there always a reason to keep trying?

My review:

This book completely pulled me in, the kind of story that keeps you turning pages long after you should have gone to sleep. Watching Watney logic his way through one catastrophe after another is both riveting and unsettling; I’m fairly certain I would have curled up, panicked, and given up somewhere around page fifty. The science is fascinating, the humor is dry and human, and yes, parts of the survival process are a little… biologically uncomfortable. Still, The Martian is a sharp reminder that perseverance, creativity, and a refusal to surrender can keep a person alive even when the universe seems to have written them off.
